Russell Westbrook’s first season with the Los Angeles Lakers has turned out to be a complete disaster. The star point guard has been singled out for criticism, with many blaming him for the Lakers’ near-complete elimination from the postseason race. Westbrook’s problems playing with LeBron James are no longer an insignificant issue, as the coaching staff is now benching him when the game is on the line.
The nine-time All-Star is struggling, but Dwyane Wade recently gave him some critical advice about playing with James that he has to take.

Last winter, Westbrook realized a boyhood ambition of playing for the Lakers, the team for whom he adored Kobe Bryant.
The 2021-22 campaign, on the other hand, has not been a pleasant one. The 33-year-old has failed to find long-term comfort, which has contributed to his team’s 26-29 record. Westbrook’s flaws have gotten to the point where supporters boo him whenever he tries a shot outside of the paint.
Westbrook is averaging 10.3 points per game in the first four games of February, shooting 27.5 percent (14-of-51) from the field and 15.4 percent from three-point range while committing 14 turnovers. In each of the past two games, he was benched in the fourth quarter due to his poor performance.

Dwyane Wade understands what it’s like to play beside LeBron James.
They were teammates for four years with the Miami Heat, earning two NBA championships and making four Finals appearances. Wade understands what it takes to give up a portion of his job in order to succeed with James. Wade gave Westbrook some sound advise before the Lakers’ defeat to the Bucks on Tuesday night.
Wade stated, “When you look at the Lakers, everyone talks about what they need to do.” “Listen, you’ve got Russell Westbrook, and he still has a lot to offer this club. When it comes to making a business choice, none of us want to give up the ball in order to take fewer shots when we are used to being able to fire whatever shots we want.
“However, sometimes when you join a team, like as this one with LeBron and AD, you have to select your positions. When the team is struggling in the second part of the season, it’s important to remember that when LeBron and AD aren’t on the court, that’s when I can be Russ. When these people are on the court, I have to make a business choice to hand the ball over and go play and do other things that I excel at.
“I’m a natural rebounder and passer of the ball.” I understand that we have a lot of turnover, but that’s to be expected. When you’re playing with certain people, you have to take your foot off the throttle a little bit.”
Westbrook’s strategy, as much as he wants to play his way, is simply not working. He’s having trouble figuring out how to contribute offensively, and more importantly, how to contribute as a secondary piece to the jigsaw. The nine-time All-Star has struggled as the third scoring option because he hasn’t fully accepted his new position.
Despite playing second fiddle to James, Wade acknowledged that the ball was mostly passed via his colleague. Because of his limited role, he was forced to find new ways to contribute, such as via passing and off-the-ball movement, in order to generate scoring chances.
Westbrook is going through a bad patch when his confidence is destroyed, but the star guard has to listen to Wade’s advise.

As much as the front office would want to wash its hands clean before the deadline on Thursday, the chance isn’t there.
There will be a lot of change in the offseason, but Los Angeles will have to make the most of what they have. Westbrook will have the opportunity to demonstrate his value, which might either help or hurt his image.
The Lakers have a difficult uphill climb ahead of them, as they currently sit in ninth place in the Western Conference rankings. As the third option, Westbrook must establish cohesiveness while LeBron James and Anthony Davis must become the guiding elements.
The heat is on, and the rest of the season will reveal if the Lakers made a major error or just needed more time to straighten out their issues.
